Sustainable Supplies

Everyone has their own thoughts when it comes to global warming. From what I've seen, I believe that we cannot continue to degrade the Earth and expect not to kill it eventually. Since I came to this conclusion, I have been looking into various ways that I, as one person (well, one with a family), could do something to help lower MY participation in the destruction of the Earth. Through reading what seems like thousands of articles, books, blog posts, etc., I have also found out that trying to change my lifestyle in this way could also help with my family's various health issues. I am going to share a few of the ideas I have tried and liked.

LAUNDRY PRODUCTS
Quite honestly, I came upon this when I was trying to find a way to save money. The fact that it is natural was a side benefit at the time. Now, I wouldn't trade it for the big name detergents. Yes, there are still bottles of those big name detergents in our house because some members of the
homemade laundry detergent
family refuse to give up their, *ahem* Time, Bounde or Dowdy *ahem*.  I only have to make a five gallon batch of this a couple times a year...washing clothes for five and towels for seven. Last summer, I had to purchase a new washing machine (the old one died after 12 years) and got one of the high efficiency models...they had to buy new soap because theirs wasn't recommended for the new machine, I was able to continue using my homemade soap. I think the clothes come out as clean and fresh smelling as theirs, for pennies on the dollar. Not to mention, I have used the same 5 gallon bucket for more than 6 years, where they have gone through I can't tell you how many plastic bottles. If my soap isn't poisoning the water like theirs. ** Side Note: Military uniforms cannot be washed with phosphates, this soap is safe for the military. I found this out while my son was active within the Marine Corps.**  In addition, for softener I use plain ole white vinegar. A gallon costs around $2.00 compared to their bottles which are closer to $6.00 for half the amount. Commercial softeners leave a film on clothing and towels that make them less absorbent and can be aggravating to sensitive skin, vinegar doesn't leave this film. According to all the articles I've read about it, vinegar softens and removes static, again all naturally. I agree that the static is controlled pretty well and clothes are soft without commercial softeners, but the towels were a little stiff. Nothing too bad, but just not as fluffy and cuddly as they had been. I have recently started using dryer balls and noticed that towels are a little softer than without. I had found a set of those "steamer" balls when cleaning and thought it was worth a shot to see how they worked...after seeing the difference, I've also made a set of wool dryer balls. Unfortunately, my grandson loves to help with laundry and finds all of these fascinating and keeps 'borrowing' them. The only problem is that at one and a half, he doesn't like to return them. Check out my blessed life , The Family Homestead , and Rural Revolution (unlike the friend mentioned in Rural Revolution, I have not noticed the scent) for recipes, reviews and cost analysis of making your own laundry detergent.

SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
Would you be grossed out to hear I have only used brand name shampoo or conditioner in my hair approximately six times in the last four years? I read a few articles about people going
Simple Mom article
shampoo free that intrigued me, so I decided to give it a try. I love it! My hair feels better, I have almost no problem with dandruff (unless I've recently used a commercial product), my straight/wavy/curly hair (yes, it's all three at the same time) has wonderful curls for about 24 hours after washing that go into nice waves after, and as much as my hairdresser brother hates to admit it - my hair is healthier. To wash my hair, I pour about 1/2 cup of baking soda into an old soda bottle (I've been using this particular bottle for almost two years) then fill the rest of the way with water while I'm in the shower and shake to mix. I just pour it on my scalp and rub through to the ends and rinse. If it happens to get on my face, I just rub it all over for a great exfoliant and skin brightener. Using the same bottle, I pour roughly the same amount of vinegar in and fill with water. Being careful not to get any into my face ('cuz, yuck!, made that mistake once or twice), I pour it over my hair and rinse out. Most websites will suggest using apple cider vinegar, but I use plain vinegar - the scent goes away when your hair is dry. One point my brother has made is that my hair feels not so great while it is still wet, I have to agree with him there, but once it is dry, it feels silky.

VARIOUS NATURAL PRODUCTS FOR MORE CLEANING
If you research natural cleaning products online, you will find way too many results to read them all. Most of them have several ingredients in common:

Now, obviously, I didn't even scratch the surface here of the search results for these products. This is just a jumping of point. If you are like me, you will do your own searches in addition to what I have shown here. An important note: Just because these products are natural, does not mean you do not have to keep them out of the reach of children. They are much less dangerous than the chemical cleaners out there, but they can still be hazardous to the health. Please be responsible and keep small children away from containers. What is much better about using natural products is that they do not leave the chemical residue that commercial cleaners do. Even bleach leaves a residue after killing the germs.

Whether you agree with the global warming accounts, want to use less chemical substances around your home or just want to try to save some money, there are plenty of ideas out there to help make your switch to more natural products easier. Another added benefit is the feeling of satisfaction you can get from doing something on your own. I know that it gives me a little bit of a thrill to know that my great grandmother would be at least a little proud of me that I'm doing some things the 'old-fashioned' way...back when people were much more self-sufficient.

Good luck on your adventure!

LGBT Love

Since this is my blog, there are times that I may express an opinion that you personally do not agree with...this is one of those times. The opinions expressed are mine and mine alone (although there are most likely people out there who agree with these statements).

Throughout the world there is an ongoing debate as to whether same sex marriage should be allowed. I cannot believe there even should be a debate.
Gay Rights are Human Rights
If two people, who are unrelated, fall in love and wish to marry, they should be allowed to do so. Recognizing the validity of a same sex couple within a committed long term relationship should be the norm, not the exception. Governments around the world need to wake up and see that there is the same level of dedication to the partner within a same sex couple as there is within mixed gender relationships.

The most prevalent argument against same sex marriage is by those who say that God does not condone acting upon the urges of 'feeling' gay. This statement may be what is expressed in the bible, however, it is also says that man has no right to act as God and make laws to govern other men. So, if one were to follow the bible directly, one would not stand in the way of another doing something "wrong".

Another argument is that the sanctity of marriage would be compromised since the purpose of marriage is to procreate. This argument holds no basis to me because there are many marriages between men and women where there
Celebrate Same Sex Parenting
are no children, by choice or circumstance. If we were to follow this statement, then those people who do not want or are unable to have children should not be allowed to marry. Those who use this argument state that people who are unable to have children have the option to adopt. News flash...gay couples are willing and able to adopt also (except from 'Christian' based adoption agencies where they discriminate).

There are people who feel that it would be wrong to allow children to be raised by gay couples. They say that these children would be subjected to teasing by others due to the fact they have two 'mommies' or 'daddies' instead of one mommy and one daddy. They say that since families consist of one of each parent these children would feel they are different. What they are not taking into account is that there are as many single parent homes in these days as their are 'traditional' family units. Children today are more understanding and accepting of the diversity of family life than they have
been in the past. Most children think
there is nothing unusual about having a mixed race couple as parents. Forty years ago, a mixed race couple and
their children were treated as social pariahs. Television often plays a pivotal role in the acceptance and 'normalization' of social change. There are several shows in which same sex couples are together, as well as shows depicting same sex couples raising children together. Children see these shows and think that this is just another type of family. They do not see it as wrong or right, just that it is.

Another group of people believe it is their right to dictate what is right and wrong. They do not agree with the scientific proof that a person is born gay, they believe that there is something that made them 'want' to be gay. Their solution is to work to rehabilitate the gay person into being straight. I don't know about you, but I would never choose to become something that vilified so intensely. Quite a few of the people who follow this belief seem to have distinct homophobic tendencies. Perhaps they are frightened that if gay marriage were recognized, they would try to take over the world and convert everyone into being gay.

Whether gay or straight, I believe that everyone has the right to the pursuit of happiness. If your happiness lies with a person of the same gender or with the opposite gender, you have the right (and should have the ability) to have your relationship recognized throughout the world as a legal entity if you so wish.

Masturbating in May

Who masturbates? No one knows for sure. It seems that every study conducted has come up with different answers. There are a number of reasons for the different numbers, but the truth of the matter is that it is a personal choice that many people are uncomfortable discussing. In 1994 was answering a question asking if masturbation could be utilized to prevent early sexual activity, then U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders responded “I think it is something that is part of human sexuality and a part of something that perhaps should be taught.” That was the end of her career, but the beginning of National Masturbation Month. Since 1995, May has been declared National Masturbation Month to reduce the negative connotations attached to masturbating. Some of the groups that support the initiative are trying to raise awareness of the physical and psychological health benefits of masturbation for both men and women, others are trying to bring attention to the practice of mutilating women's sexual organs within certain cultures. Planned Parenthood has also supported National Masturbation Month as an alternative to intercourse as a means to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Just as each person has their own methods for reaching climax with a partner, they also have their own way(s) to masturbate. Every year, the sex toy industry becomes larger as a direct result of the fact that more people are finding that utilizing sexual aids can bring heightened enjoyment. Sex toys can be used solo, but they can also be integrated into use by couples as a way to enhance their relationship. I thought I would share a few of these aids...

For the men, there are masturbation sleeves. These can be as simple as a one handed jelly tube that the man would insert his penis into, then stroke until he ejaculates, or more elaborate ones that include vibrations or beads to enhance the experience. These can be used by a couple where the woman is the one holding the sleeve and stroking. Most sleeves can be easily cleaned by turning it inside out and washing with a toy cleaner, then allowing to air dry.

Masturbators can vary from simple, like one that is styled to resemble breast or rear end, to the elaborate, which could be a life sized doll, or mid-range, which would include the entire torso from neck to hips. These masturbators are available in both male and female. Most people would assume that these can only be used solo, however while researching this, I found several instances where they shown being used by a couple.

With all the attention women's g-spots have been getting, there has been a part of the male
anatomy that has been largely ignored. The prostate gland is very important to the male sexual health and pleasure. By utilizing a prostate massage, many health benefits may be reaped. Men who regularly experience an ejaculation while receiving a prostate massage are less likely to suffer from prostate cancer. The climax during a prostate massage has been described as more intense and longer lasting. The massage can be performed manually with the fingers, or with the use of a specifically designed massager. There are many models of massagers, from the simple 'stick' to a remote control vibrating dong type. There are many tutorials and articles available to explain the proper methods of performing a prostate massage.

Women have a seemingly endless array of vibrators and dildos to choose from for their pleasure. Along with the numerous models and features, there are varying materials, sizes and colors. As with anything else, personal preference plays a major role in which one a woman will choose. A dildo is a non-vibrating toy that is generally shaped like a penis. However, there are many glass dildos that are shaped in anything from a simple rod that resembles a stick to a rosebud. Some are curved to help reach the g-spot.

Vibrators are just as varied. They are manufactured from jelly, silicone, or another plastic material. There are those that have gentle shaping and those that are shaped into a penis, some are even shaped like animals or little human figures. Nearly everyone has heard of 'The Rabbit' thanks to the infamous "Sex and the City" episode. There isn't enough room here to speak on the different shapes companies have designed into their vibrators. One thing most have in common is that there is a shaft, as well as some sort clitoral stimulation. The higher price you are willing to pay, the higher quality materials you are going to get, as well as more features, more selection in speeds and vibration patterns. Whatever you are looking for, it's probably out there.

Whether you have used the toys specifically discussed here or one of the, literally, thousands of others, or none, perhaps this will allow you to think about trying something new. The many health benefits certainly make for a good argument to begin, or continue, to masturbate. It helps to relieve stress, lower blood pressure, assists in relationships where one partner wishes for sexual contact more often that the other, can be helpful in cases of depression, raises self-esteem, promotes a feeling of well-being, can help with insomnia, and it is the safest sex you will ever have (especially when performed on a solo basis), with little to no chance of STD's or pregnancy (obviously, if fluids are exchanged, your chances increase). There are many more health benefits than these listed, I found this wonderful and short article that still manages to have a lot of great information.

For those that are concerned with the publicity of going to a physical store to purchase a new toy, there are any number of websites that sell these toys, including Amazon there are also many companies that do in home demonstration parties similar to Tupperware parties, you can also order directly from most of the manufacturers of the toys. My personal favorite manufacturer is Lelo, they have a wonderful line, even if it is a little bit limited and on the higher end of the budget. A company that offers a greater variety with a more affordable price range is Rocks Off. When looking for glass dildos, the go to company is Don Wands. Probably the most well known mail order company for purchasing sexual enhancement items is Adam & Eve. Any of these is a great choice to add to your personal pleasure, although I do have to admit to loving the sex toy parties. The chance to get a bunch of friends together for a fun time while learning about the proper use (as well as some lesser known uses) of the products is way up there on my list of good times. I have been a few parties of this sort and always had a great time. I tend to prefer companies/consultants that allow for co-ed parties, as they can be very entertaining! I also have a friend who is a representative for For Your Pleasure, so I'm rather biased there.

If it feels good, do it!
